Senior Design Project Matching
During BENG 187A, one of the main goals is to secure a match to the project to be completed during the coming academic year. We want to ensure students match to a project of their interest. The more proactive a student is in the process, the better the chances of securing an excellent match for your senior design project.
Project matching happens multiple ways. The instructor will gather project options and those will be posted below. Students interested in a particular project should reach out directly to the prospective mentor and express interest and secure an interview. If there is a mutual match, students and mentors will notify the instructor that there is a confirmed match.
Sometimes students know who they would like to work with, other times students are looking for partner(s). Team size varies and depends on the project and mentor preference, but typically team size is 3 to 4 students. To help facilitate communication amongst the cohort, you can use the Canvas discussion board so that students with similar interests can coalesce around a project for more streamlined interviewing with prospective mentors.
In some cases, students and a mentor have already mutually developed a project. In that situation, the project should still be submitted on the project list for book keeping, and the student should notify the instructor of this arrangement. Oftentimes, an additional student may need to be recruited to the team and our process will facilitate that.
At the end of the quarter, if you have not matched to a project, you will need to be responsive to the teaching team so we can faciliate your matching to a project. Please note that matches we propose will still need to be approved by the mentor of the project, so it’s really best to take an active part in your project matching process during spring quarter of BENG 187A. Most projects will be filled by the end of the quarter, so we cannot guarantee that you will be matched with a project of your preference.
In BENG 187A class, we will be communicating with you about details on the project matching process and the deadlines. Canvas will be a main mechanism of communication. Please contact Prof. Taylor (atayloramos@ucsd.edu) or one of the Teaching Assistants with your questions.
